On Nov. 18, 2025, at 5:07 p.m., Brooks RCMP and emergency services, including EMS and Fire Departments from Scandia and Rolling Hills, responded to reports of a multi-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 873, near Rainer. Alta. Upon arrival, it was found that three vehicles, containing one occupant each, collided at the intersection.
Investigation revealed that a white van was westbound and failed to stop for a stop sign. The van entered the intersection at a significant speed and struck the enclosed trailer of a northbound semi-truck. The trailer of the semi-truck was pushed into the oncoming lane which led to a southbound SUV colliding with the trailer.
The driver of the van, a 22-year-old male resident of Coaldale, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the SUV, a 47-year-old female resident of the Vauxhall area, had to be extricated from her vehicle and was transported to a local hospital via ground ambulance with undetermined injuries; she was later transported to a Calgary hospital in stable condition. The driver of the semi truck was uninjured.
A RCMP Collision Re-Constructionist attended the scene to assist in the investigation. Traffic was detoured around the scene for approximately five hours. RCMP continue to investigate.
RCMP sends condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
