Student newspaper in BC gives voice to the school

By Rachael Lesosky, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter, Valley Voice

The inaugural issue of NSS Voice hit the newsstands of school hallways in November, thanks to the efforts of Tracy Knecht’s brand new journalism class. Since then, the fledgling journalists have released three more papers – and have no plans to stop.

New issues of NSS Voice are released every two weeks. Topics range from sports, interviews, and events, to safety tips, art projects, jokes, and word searches. So called because it gives a voice to the student body, NSS Voice is also a nod to their community’s local newspaper.

Knecht said the class has been going really well. She wasn’t sure if the students would like it; the first few days were quiet, with whispers from some about switching to the cooking class. However, Knecht said they’ve since really gotten into it.

Students have found particular roles they enjoy most. One has stepped up as the president to lead the paper, and another is in charge of the layout. Some most enjoying reporting, while others prefer photography, and others still like doing just about whatever needs to be done.

The December 8 issue features a cover story by Haiden Smith on the “unforgettable black light dance” in Room 10, organized by student council. Hunter Rombough reminds students to respect and take care of the school. The Falcons U13 hockey team’s action-packed weekend is recounted by Skyler Rosin, and George Levaaho showcases the talents of grade 10 woodworker Radomir Wright, who is close to finishing a fully handmade chess set. Jace O’Neil keeps it light with puzzles and jokes. The eight-page newspaper also features the hard work of Grace Izairovich, Victoria Holahan, Violet Moore, Taysen Smith, London Hicks, Elise Hall, Claire Smith, and Sienna Lyons.

The journalism class is also responsible for putting together the yearbook. The class is taking some time to focus on that, but will be back at newspapers again after exams and the turn-of-the-semester tide.
